A Hurricane Season in Cartagena
With Scout safely in Cartagena for the hurricane season, the plan for the next few months was to stay put. But we didn’t stay entirely still, and one outing was a week in the Islas del Rosario, just south of the city.
It was also a good time to look back on how far we’d come. We put together a one minute summary of the season’s sailing - all 5,000 miles of it, from Grenada to Colombia.
In July, Hurricane Beryl caused terrible damage in the Windward Islands, including in Grenada, where Scout had spent the previous hurricane season. Our Grenada courtesy flag might be a little battered, but the red, gold, and green is still shining through, proud and strong. Our deepest thoughts and support go out to everyone affected in the beautiful islands that we called home last year.
Scout was yearning to be out sailing, but she needed to be patient during the hurricane season. So we rewarded her with some fresh bling in the meantime: a brand new anchor chain!
It was a quiet few months for Scout in Cartagena, but she did enjoy some other upgrades, including her new Starlink Mini.
We held off investing in a dish for a few years, worried about the power consumption of earlier models, and knowing there was a smaller form factor coming through FCC compliance. The wait was worth it!
It’s a small laptop-sized unit, easily mounted and dismounted as required, runs off 12V (~40W), and has a built-in router that easily covers the whole boat with WiFi.
We easily get 150-200Mbps in the marina, though it’s yet to be tested on passage. And the best part is that, because of latent capacity in Colombia, the unit and monthly service costs are insanely good value. She’s one happily online boat!
By October, Scout’s “Season Three” was about to begin.
