Jamaica: Port Antonio, Nanny Falls and Blue Mountain Coffee
Our last blog post left us raising the courtesy flag as we approached Port Antonio, on the north eastern side of Jamaica. But before we arrived, there was one more thing to report from the passage from Bonaire.
In the middle of the night, a sailing yacht came within a mile of Scout. Ships that pass in the night, only this one was called Sea Eagle, and at 266ft she is the world’s largest aluminium sailing yacht. It was a shame it wasn’t daylight or we would’ve taken a picture.
Once the rudder mishap was behind us, it was big seas and blue skies all the way from Bonaire to Jamaica.
The winds were steady enough that we kept the spinnaker up after dark. Would you fly a spinnaker at night?
Once we had cleared in, we had time to explore Port Antonio. We found colourful scenes everywhere, both in the town and around the marina. The harbormaster was very helpful and friendly during our stay.
From Port Antonio we also took some trips inland: to the Maroons’ Nanny Falls with buddy boat SV Faith crew John and Marilyn, and to Devon’s Blue Mountain coffee ranch.
Then it was time to weigh anchor again and head west, towards the Cayman Islands. Farewell Jamaica!
